FAQ

What is queer hair?

Queer hair doesn’t look any type of way – but it is always affirming. It starts with honest communication that leaves you feeling empowered because the end result is authentic to you.

MAL Queer Hair Studio was created to be a safe and inclusive space so that a community that is often marginalized and overlooked can feel comfortable getting hair services.

Everyone who works at MAL is queer-identified but you do not have to be queer to be a MAL client – however, we do ask you to respect the queer space.

How can I schedule an Appointment?

You can schedule an appointment on our Appointments page. Please note that services are limited by the artist. We do not accept appointment requests over the phone at this time.

What hair service should I book?

Visit our Appointments page to get a breakdown of our available services. We offer non-gendered pricing based on the time it takes to achieve the desired result. If you have any questions or want to discuss a special request, please contact us to talk hair.

Do you offer barbering services?

We offer clipper cut services, such as fades, tapers, & hard parts, but we do not offer shaves or beard/neck clean-ups.

Can I bring a child in for a service or to accompany me for my service?

We can provide haircut & haircolor services to individuals 13 years and older, however we do not allow unaccompanied minors in the studio. Children can relax in our lounge during their guardian’s service, but please note that our studio is decorated with art that can contain mature subjects.

We can provide paramedical tattoo services to individuals 18 years and older.

Are your Products cruelty free/vegan?

All of our products are cruelty-free with no animal testing. The majority of our hair products are vegan, but there are a few exceptions: Hairstory New Wash (contains wool keratin), Hairstory Undressed (contains hydrolyzed silk), Hairstory Wax & Barb Pomade (contains beeswax).

All paramedical pigments are vegan, but the provided aftercare balm is not (contains beeswax). Vegan recommendations can be provided.

What is a Product Charge?

Product charge is just that – its the cost of the variable product used for your individual service, priced by the gram. Instead of surprise à la carte add-ons, we stick to a fair & transparent pricing structure.

How can I get a sliding scale service?

Some of our artists offer a sliding scale rate across their services available to all BIPOC (Black and/or Indigenous People of Color) clients. If you are interested, please include your desired sliding scale rate in your appointment notes when scheduling.

Does MAL have gender-neutral bathrooms?

Yes! MAL has an ADA accessible private single user all-gender bathroom.

Is MAL wheelchair-accessible?

Can I purchase the featured art?
